Celebrating Careers in Construction Month

Oct 26, 2023

This month we’re celebrating Careers in Construction Month! Throughout the month of October, we’re highlighting our team and their unique experiences, expertise, and advice for young professionals seeking a career in construction.

We asked them for their perspective. Here’s what they had to say.

Q: Can you describe your current role and responsibilities at Buffalo Builders?

Eli Simpson

Assistant Project Manager

“As an APM, my job is to assist the project manager and superintendents by taking care of the behind-the-scenes, “outside-the-fence” work. If you are a people person who enjoys seeing the development of your work into a deliverable product for your client, then construction is for you.”

Bruce Gammill, Superintendent: “I am a superintendent working daily with our office personnel and subcontractors. My daily duties include making sure all construction is built to specifications laid out by my PM and architects drawings.”

Mike Gilbert

Chief Operating Officer

“My role at Buffalo Builders covers many aspects of the business from helping to refine process and procedure, to business development and most importantly, development of the team. I think my most rewarding accomplishments in the industry have been helping others grow their skills and careers in the industry.”

Q: How has the construction field evolved since you first started?

Stephanie Black

Controller

“The construction industry has grown immensely over the years that I’ve been involved with it. Since being at Buffalo I have gained experience in the Multifamily sector of construction, which is new for me.”

Bruce Gammill, Superintendent: “The computer age has changed the construction industry with everything from GPS to Construction apps available for tracking a job’s progress. Personally, I’m still learning daily.”

Eli Simpson, Assistant Project Manager: “After only being in construction for a few years, technology has surprisingly changed rapidly, with so many applications available and streamlined project management software. I have gained the ability to run a project more efficiently, as well as client relationships since being at Buffalo.”

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in construction?

Jeffrey Nickerson

Safety Director

“You can pave your own way in construction with consistency and hard work. The best advice I can give is to serve and be present where you want to be.”

Jay Warner

Project Manager

“There are many opportunities in the construction field today. Trade schools and apprenticeships are great ways to work your way to a profitable career.”

Sheila Price

Project Manager

“If you are a team-oriented person and enjoy a fast paced environment, Jump In!  This industry needs people who want to learn, grow, and succeed.  There are so many aspects to our industry from field workers, licensed craftsmen/women, support staff, management, and many more between.”

Bill Spence, Superintendent: “Be committed. It’s not an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday job. Learn all you can about the means and methods of whatever you are doing, whether it’s commercial or multifamily.”
